Cold-weather boat ramp safety
Ice, slick planks, kill-switch discipline, and hypothermia basics for late-fall and winter launches at public ramps.
Winter fishing can be excellent. Cold ramps are also where preventable accidents cluster.
Ramp and parking
- Assume planks and slopes are slick — non-slip boots, slow backing, spotter if possible.
- Keep spectators out of the launch lane.
- Clear snow/ice from trailer lights and license plates before you roll.
On the water
- Wear a PFD; cold water shock does not care how well you swim in July.
- File a simple float plan with a person on shore.
- Dress for immersion (layers that still work when wet), not for the sunny truck ride.
- Kill switch clipped on — always.
When to scrub the trip
Freezing spray, big wind against current, or a ramp sheeted in ice are good reasons to tow home. There will be another day. Shortlist alternate ramps on Public Access so “Plan B” is not improvisation in a whiteout.
