How to plan a boat day using public ramps
Pick a waterbody, shortlist public ramps, check trailer parking and wind, and build a simple timeline so you are not launching at noon into a thunderstorm.
A good boat day is decided the night before, not at the ramp with a dead battery.
Night-before checklist
- Pick the lake or river and a backup within 30 minutes.
- On Public Access, search the nearest city and list 3–5 public ramps.
- Check each ramp’s waterbody name and access type; prefer ramps with clear addresses.
- Look up wind, storms, and water level / generation schedules for tailwaters.
- Confirm trailer lights, plug, PFD count, and fuel.
Morning timeline that works
- T-90 min: Leave with time for coffee and a wrong turn.
- T-45 min: Arrive, pay fees, prep in the lot.
- T-30 min: Launch and clear the ramp.
- Build in an early exit if afternoon storms are likely.
Choosing among similar ramps
Favor the ramp with better trailer parking and a calmer basin over the one that is two minutes closer. If the first lot is full, your shortlist is why you are not stuck.
