Public land packing list: hunt and fish day trips
A realistic day-pack list for public land: navigation, safety, weather layers, and the small items people forget until they need them.
You do not need a catalog of gear. You need the items that turn a bad surprise into a non-event.
Always
- License / tags (photo backup on your phone plus the physical copy if required)
- Map offline + compass or a known backup phone
- Water and salty snacks
- Headlamp with fresh batteries
- Basic first aid, blister care, tweezers for ticks
- Layers for a 20°F colder evening than the forecast high
Hunting add-ons
- Required blaze orange/pink
- Game bags / gloves
- Method to mark a blood trail ethically and legally
- Knowledge of the packing-out distance before you shoot
Fishing / boat add-ons
- PFDs for everyone
- Throwable flotation where required
- Anchor, spare shear pin / basic tool kit if you run a small motor
- Drain plug ritual (see our pre-departure tool)
Use the trip gear checklist to generate a printable list for your activity and weather, then the Did I forget…? list before you leave the driveway.
