Public access vs private land: stay legal
How to tell public access from private property, what “open to hunting” signs mean, and how to avoid trespass near ramps and WMAs.
Most trespass problems happen at edges: the creek behind a subdivision, the two-track past the WMA sign, the “friendly” field with no posting.
Trust hierarchy
- Official agency map and unit language.
- On-the-ground signs that match that map.
- Ownership apps (helpful, not courtroom gospel).
- Word of mouth (least reliable).
Ramps and shorelines
A public ramp does not make the entire shoreline public. Launch, use the designated facilities, and respect adjacent private docks and yards.
Hunting edges
- Purple paint, posted signs, and fenced homes mean stop.
- Walk-in areas are still private land with temporary permission — leave gates as you found them and know the dates.
- If you are unsure, back out and hunt a clearly marked unit.
Public Access is for discovering public candidates quickly. Your job is to confirm the boundary before you make the first footstep or cast.
