Verify before you go: a 10-minute pre-trip check

A short verification routine for ramps and public land—fees, closures, seasons, weather, and how to avoid a wasted drive.

Ten minutes of verification beats two hours of driving to a locked gate.

For boat ramps

  1. Confirm the ramp is still public (agency or county parks page).
  2. Check fees, gate hours, and trailer-lot rules.
  3. Look for construction, drawdowns, or harmful algae notices.
  4. Read the wind forecast for your lake orientation.

For hunting land

  1. Confirm the unit name matches the proclamation.
  2. Check season, legal shooting hours, and weapon.
  3. Look for temporary closures (fire, habitat work, youth-only days).
  4. Identify two parking options.

Shared checks

  • Tell someone your plan.
  • Download offline maps.
  • Pack water and a light.

Public Access gets you candidates fast. The agency page and a weather app finish the job.
